About Me

I am a mom of 2 young children, an educator of teenagers, and a former radio personality. I used to write a lot when I was younger, and even went to school for journalism, but I haven’t done much of it at all in the last 16 years since becoming a teacher. This blog, and seeing the blogs of many others here and on Twitter, is reminding me how much I love it.

  1. I am father to two young daughters. I am an elementary school teacher, married to an elementary school teacher. I used to be a radio dj, waaaaaaaaay back in the days of reel-to-reel tapes and record albums. I wrote a lot in my younger days and then, stopped for years because of teaching and life. But now, as I get closer to retirement (2018) and feel the influence of social media and blogging washing over me, I have jumped back into writing again. ………….Hmmmmm! It appears as though we have been cut from similar cloth! My name is Tom (Cobbie’s World, @cobourgcobbie) and it is a pleasure to make the acquaintance of so seemingly kindred a spirit. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I was in the radio biz back in Nova Scotia (CJCB AM) and summer intern work as CKSL in London, Ontario. I studied Radio and TV Arts at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. One class, my prof., who was general manager of CKFM, 99.9 on the dial, told us that next class would be held at his station because he wanted us to be introduced to groundbreaking technology that was going to change the industry. We sat down in his office and listened to some song coming in over the speakers. He asked us if we noticed anything different about the song. Someone mentioned that it sounded a little crisper and clearer and wondered if he had new speakers. The prof smiled and told us that what we were listening to was, in fact, something called a compact disc and that nothing was ever going to be the same again in radio. Turns out, he was right. I’ll never forget that night. It was exciting times in Canada’s biggest city. But, I was never really good enough to be a professional radio dj. Teaching was always my fallback option and so, upon graduating from Ryerson, I enrolled in Teacher’s College right away and have never regretted that decision. 2018, I retire from a satisfying career in the classroom. Maybe then, the writing life can come to the fore. ๐Ÿ™‚ Sorry to have blathered on, on your blog. Bye for now.

  3. I was there from ’94 to ’98. First of the 4 year graduates. Jerry Good was still there. I had him for a radio class in first year. We had to create our dream station for him in a HUGE report. I bet you did too!! I went to Carleton for Journalism for a year before, and so I wasn’t keen on living on campus. I lived in a different spot each year, all within a few blocks of Ryerson. It was fun. I worked at CKNX Radio, where I am now, as the Summer Events Coordinator during university, and worked at Global TV and Skywords Traffic, both in T.O., after graduating. Such great experiences. I then decided to go to teachers college kind of last minute, and ended up getting a job while still in teachers college. Teacher shortage = lucky Shannon! I have been there since – 13 years this month – and have been at the radio station off and on again since 2008.

  4. Well, it is an awfully small world, isn’t it? Won’t really call myself a broadcaster these days. I have been teaching for 25 1/2 years now so, I am a teacher, first and foremost. But, just the same, I still get fundraising phone calls from Ryerson a couple of times a year! Lol! ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway, it certainly is a pleasure getting to know such a kindred spirit. Feel free to stay in touch if you like. Bye for now.

  5. Hi,

I’ve been talking to Thomas Marlowe and we are both missing the Trifecta Challenge. One thing led to another and we have decided to set up Light and Shade Challenge where there are prompts twice every week and a chance to share what inspiration strikes.

We are not trying to be the same as Trifecta. They were awesome and I miss them. We do have some really exciting ideas of our own, though and can’t wait to see what happens. It would be great if you could come and join us and see where this journey takes us. Good writers are always welcome. If you have any questions then get in touch either on the Light and Shade Challenge Blog http://lightandshadechallenge.blogspot.co.uk/ or on the Facebook page. It would be wonderful to hear from you.
